Here are some pictures of Shore Rivers teaching 3rd grade students about the Atlantic Sturgeon! The 3rd graders ended the week with an action outreach project to teach others about the endangered Atlantic Sturgeon and help clean our rivers! Thank you to Mrs. McGuckin for coordinating this great project for our students! #cdesstrong ... See MoreSee Less
I found this article interesting. Made me wonder what “action outreach project” is.
Efforts to have guest speakers in the classroom are sincerely applauded. Out of curiosity I searched this topic and found these excerpts from a NOAA website enlightening : “Due to overfishing, the abundance of natal populations is much less than historic levels…” and “The most significant threats to Atlantic sturgeon are unintended catch in some commercial fisheries, dams that block access to spawning areas, poor water quality (which harms development of sturgeon offspring), dredging of spawning areas, water withdrawals from rivers, and vessel strikes.” Certainly having healthy habitat (“clean rivers”) is important, but it is but one of multiple concerns mentioned in this website. Hopefully this more complete picture was included for without it we risk teaching children what to think instead of how to think. www.fisheries.noaa.gov/species/atlantic-sturgeon
