The Family Life & Human Sexuality Unit is part of the TCPS Health Education program of study in the Fifth and Eighth Grades.

The Fifth-grade Health Education includes instruction about the human reproductive system. During the Family Life unit of study, students will learn about the male and female reproductive systems, the physical and emotional changes associated with puberty. The indicators that are covered in the unit are:

• Describe the physical, social, and emotional changes that occur during puberty.
• Summarize that the onset and progression of puberty varies considerably.
• Describe human reproductive systems, including medically accurate names for internal and external genitalia and their functions.
• Describe how puberty prepares human bodies for the potential to reproduce.
• Explain the importance of talking with parents and other trusted adults about issues related to relationships, growth and development, and sexual health.
• Analyze the relationship between consent and personal boundaries.

Eight-grade Health Education includes instruction about the human reproductive system. During the Family Life unit of study, students will learn about the male and female reproductive systems, the process of fertilization and implantation, consent, and reducing the risks of sexually transmitted infections. The indicators that are covered in the unit are:

• Summarize human reproductive systems including medically accurate names for internal and external genitalia and their functions
• Explain menstruation, fertilization, and implantation
• Analyze factors, including alcohol and substances, that can affect the ability to give or perceive consent to sexual activity.
• Summarize why individuals have the right to refuse sexual contact
• Explain the importance of setting personal limits to avoid sexual risk behaviors
• Discuss what does and does not constitute sexual consent
• Describe ways sexually active people can reduce the risk of pregnancy
• Explain ways sexually active people can reduce the risk of HIV, and other STI’s including condoms and preventative medications
• Analyze the negative consequences of sending sexually explicit pictures or messages by email or cell phone or posting sexually explicit pictures on social media sites.

Maryland State law requires that parents/guardians be notified of this information. You have the option of having your child excluded from health class during the Family Life unit of study. You may exercise this option by notifying your child’s school in writing. Please be assured that there is no penalty or negative consequence if you choose to exercise this option. Students excused at their parent/guardian’s request will be provided with other worthwhile learning activities on a health-related topic.
